For many years, the presence of yessotoxins (YTXs) in shellfish has contributed to the outcome of the traditional mouse bioassay and has on many occasions caused closure of shellfisheries. Since YTXs do not appear to cause diarrhoea in man and exert low oral toxicity in animal experiments, it has been suggested that they should be removed from regulation. Before doing so, it is important to determine whether the oral toxicity of YTXs is enhanced when present together with shellfish toxins known to cause damage to the gastrointestinal tract. Bonamiosis due to the intrahaemocytic protistan parasite Bonamia ostreae is a European endemic disease affecting flat oysters Ostrea edulis. The parasite has been described in different ecosystems from estuaries to open sea and no clear correlations could be demonstrated between the development of the disease and environmental parameters such as temperature or salinity. The parasite life cycle, including its survival outside the host is not completely known. The REPAMO network (network ofmollusc pathology), created in 1986, ensures the survey of shellfish health status along French coasts according? to European Directives 91/67/EEC and 95/70/EEC. The aims of the network are 1 - to prevent the introduction and spread of exotic pathogens, 2-to study the means to decrease the impact of pathogens already present and to survey their evolution. After its first description in June 1979 in L'Ile Tudy, Brittany, the parasite rapidly spread to all French oyster farming areas and in other European countries through transfers of live molluscs. Bonamiosis and marteiliosis, another protozoan disease appeared in the seventies, drastically reduced the French flat oyster production from 20 000 tonnes in 1970 to less than 2000 tonnes after 1981. Bonamiosis was first reported in association with mass mortality of flat oysters, Ostrea edulis, in June 1979 in L'Ile Tudy, Brittany. The disease rapidly spread to all of the oyster farming areas in France but also in other European countries. The French flat oyster production, which already suffered from another protozoan disease, marteiliosis, decreased from 5500 mt in 1979 to less than 2000 mt after 1980. In 2001, about 350 French farms sell 1650 mt of flat oysters. This production mainly relies on natural spat collection which specially occurs in Quiberon bay. Considering the epizootics which affect the French stock of flat oysters, Ostrea edulis (Grizel, 1985), trials to introduce an Australian oyster, Ostrea angasi, have been undertaken. The spat produced in a hatchery from breeders imported from Australia were reared in the south ofBrittany and in Normandy (Bougrier et al., 1986). Following mass mortalities (65% of individuals) a haplosporidian was observed in this species. Sporogenesis of the parasite was studied using Iight and electron microscopy. |

The originality of this project consists in the interdisciplinary approach gathering the impact of toxic phytoplankton blooms and metallic pollution on health (behaviour, stress, immunity, genetic) and disease development of the Manila clam, an economieally important species. The Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum is the second exploited bivalve in the world. It was introduced in Arcachon bay during the 80's and is today exploited by professional fishermen (57 licences). Of the 75 laboratories contacted through the survey, 54 answered, 14 of which are partially or totally devoted to mollusc diseases. In fact, only 4 laboratories are devoted full-time to this work. Of the 14 laboratories that declared to work on the diagnosis of mollusc diseases, 12 stated that they worked with mussels, 12 with oysters, 9 with clams and 8 with other mollusc species. Recently, an increasing number of research teams are engaged in developing DNA-based diagnostic techniques for mollusc pathogens. These techniques are slowly moving from development in specialised laboratories for research purposes, to routine application and are expected to find an increasing use in routine disease monitoring programs in mollusc aquaculture and in efforts to prevent the spread of pathogens within and between nations. Considering the probable development and interest in these diagnostic techniques, the potential for wide applications in aquaculture and the inherent problems currently associated with their use, it appears necessary to address these issues. |
